In this stage, the students first encounter and identify the
instructional task. The
purpose of the Engagement phase is to peak student’s interest and makes
connections between the concept and everyday life, making the concept
meaningful. Here they make connections between past and present learning
experiences, lay the organizational ground work for the activities ahead and
stimulate their involvement in the anticipation of these activities. The engage
phase should focus students on the lesson topic through the questions or brief activities that promote curiosity and stimulate prior knowledge.
Exploration
In this stage, students have the opportunity to conduct an
inquiry-based investigation and get directly involved in the topic and
materials. The purpose of the Exploration stage is to get students working
together to build common experiences while developing an understanding of the
concept. Teachers are to be a facilitator, providing materials and guiding
focus while students make a hypothesis, test their own predictions and draw
their own conclusions.
Explanation
In this stage, students will focus their attention on
developing explanations for the evidence determined by observations and experience
gained during their explorations. The purpose of the Explanation stage is to
provide students an opportunity to collaborate with peers and communicate what
they have learned so far. Explanations should include: data, drawings, labels
and questions that have be formed during explorations.
Elaboration
In this stage, the students are allowed time to apply their
new knowledge and understandings of the concept to continue to explore. The purpose of the Elaboration phase
is permit students time to reflect and then to expand on the concepts that they
have learned.
In this stage, both students and teacher reflect on the concept
and determine how much learning has taken place. The purpose of the Evaluation phase is to assess
if the learner has achieved understanding of the concept and knowledge. This
stage can occur throughout all points of the instructional process. Teachers
can evaluate progress through: rubrics, scoring guides, teacher observation, student
interviews, portfolios, and journal entries.
